David Gossman Biography


David Gossman has a B.S. and M.S. in Interdisciplinary Physical Science, and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists (FAIC) and is a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI). He is the Managing Partner, Specialty Graphene Research LLC, President, Gossman Consulting, Inc., President, ChemRight Laboratories, Inc., Chief Investigator, Gossman Forensics (a division of ChemRight Laboratories, Inc.), Owner, Hidden Bluffs Farm, and Sole Proprietor, TreeFarmProducts.com. He has been Manager, Cement Kiln Services for Safety-Kleen Corp.; Manager, Business Development for McKesson Envirosystems; and Technical Director for Systech Corp.

During his professional scientific career, he developed a large number of the commercially available systems for utilizing waste as fuel in cement kilns. Over the last twenty-two years he has provided expert witness and investigation services in matters of fires, explosions, chemical releases, personal injury, enforcement actions and similar issues related to litigation support. Prior to entering the hazardous waste management field in 1980, he held a non-teaching faculty position at the Michigan State University Heavy Ion Laboratory where he worked as an instrumentation engineer on superconducting magnet systems and mapping magnetic fields.

He is currently serving on the American Institute of Chemists Editorial Review Board. Over the years David Gossman has been involved in the process of developing, reviewing and approving numerous ASTM standards. He is a named inventor on five patents granted by the US Patent Office, a number of which involve safe disposal and/or recycling of medical waste. One is as the sole inventor of a system for controlling mercury emissions from industrial furnaces.

He is the son of Martha and Ronald Gossman, an electrical engineer who worked for the US Air Force. David served four years on a school board in Illinois in the 1990s and was president of that board for two years, overseeing the construction of a new high school (on time and on budget). He has overseen the construction of more than ten major industrial facilities (on time and on budget) and led the successful permitting effort for a large industrial plant inside the City of Chicago. He was invited to present at the 5th World Conference of the Society of Ecological Restoration.

He received the Iowa Farm Environmental Leader award in 2019 from the Governor of Iowa. In 2004 was named Woodland Owner Division District Winner in Jackson County Iowa. He has been certified by NASA since 1978 to handle moon rocks, and has taken them to presentations at the local schools (K-college). David remains involved in the local community as an Assistant Swim Coach and Level II Swim Meet Official.

Manager, Cement Kiln Services.  Continued to manage and expand hazardous waste fuel use in cement kilns after McKesson Envirosystems acquisition by Safety-Klean.

1986 to 1987 McKesson Envirosystems, Fort Wayne, Indiana

Manager, Business Development.
  Developed and managed cement kiln outlet for waste fuels including state of the art on-site laboratory. Fuels outlet permitted overall corporate growth to record levels.  Also assisted in corporate development of standard company analytical procedures, QA/QC program, and health and safety evaluation system.  Negotiated corporate purchase of Perkin-Elmer GCs and minicomputers to standardize plant labs.

7/1985 to 3/1986 Marketing Manager.  Assisted in technical development and marketing of cement kiln waste fuels outlet in Puerto Rico.  Conducted systems analysis of three plant labs to improve operations.  Developed and implemented a new waste qualification program, providing a 50% increase in number of qualifications and adding $500,000 in corporate revenues for qualification analysis services.

Technical Services Director and Safety and Regulatory Manager.
 Transferred to corporate staff of vice president.  Assumed added responsibilities of corporate safety and regulatory compliance.  originated and performed early design of computerized, plant level system for receiving, invoicing, and other real time data management activities.

3/1982 to 10/1982 Technical Services Director.  Responsible for all technical aspects of the Waste-to-fuels Division.  Analyzed and specified analytical equipment and computers for labs in Ohio, California, and Kansas.  Responsible for the design and set-up of each of the new labs./  Continued training of all new chemists and other technical personnel.  Additional research and development of faster and more accurate methods of analysis.

2/1980 to 3/1982 Site Manager and Chemist.  Built, developed methods for, and operated pilot project laboratory for analyzing waste solvents prior to their use as fuel in a cement kiln.  Project involved extensive research into cement chemistry and industrial waste solvent chemistry in order to determine appropriate and analytical criteria and methods.  Hired, trained, and managed staff of up to five chemists and technicians. Trained two future site managers.  Position involved extensive communications with cement plant personnel, industrial waste generators, waste haulers, and corporate sales and management staff.  Also responsible for on-site interactions with federal and state regulatory personnel.

6/1977 to 4/1978 MSU-NSF Heavy Ion Laboratory Michigan State University

Specialist (university faculty position).  Systems engineering work involved design, construction, and operation of instrumentation systems. Implemented computer controlled magnet mapping system and was involved in design and operation of cyclotron control systems.  Technologies included digital and analog electronics, mini-computers, cryogenics, RF systems, super-conducting magnets, and vacuum systems.  Wrote the in-house bi-weekly engineering newsletter "Cyclotron News" updating technical changes and developments in operating and future systems.

6/1975 to 6/1977 Research Aide.  Same as above.  Also performed computer assisted analysis of nuclear spectra; occasionally supervised other student employees doing computer analysis.  Gave tours of the cyclotron lab to school groups and the general public.

Skilled Labor.  Implemented the conversion of a mothballed sewage digester to a methane producing solid waste/sewage digester.   Included supervising one other employee, purchase of all needed equipment and supplies, and implementation of drawn-up design.

  •  Managed the economic planning and all stages of business operations of HWF programs for Safety Kleen, which included marketing and sales strategies.
  •  Developed an additional HWF facility for Safety Kleen at a cement plant in South Carolina. This facility has the largest storage facility capacity of any in the country.

  •  Developed and managed a "green grass" HWF facility at the largest cement kiln in the world. This process included permitting, community relations, facility design, construction, personnel hiring, training and management, contract negotiations with the cement manufacturer and training of marketing and sales personnel. The facility was on line burning HWF within five months after a decision was made by both companies to pursue the project. This HWF facility promoted McKesson Envirosystems revenue and profitability growth to record levels and was one of the key reasons for Safety Kleen's acquisition of McKesson Envirosystems.
  •  Assisted in the development of McKesson Envirosystems standard analytical procedures, QA/QC program and health and safety evaluation system.
  •  Performed a comprehensive systems analysis at three McKesson Envirosystems solvent recycling/waste fuel-blending facilities to improve efficiency and QA/QC.
  •  Negotiated corporate purchase of laboratory equipment and computers worth $250,000 to standardize plant labs.
  •  Developed and implemented a new comprehensive hazardous waste stream qualification program for McKesson Envirosystems. The system provided a 50% increase in the number of qualifications and added $500,000 in corporate revenues for qualification analysis services.

  •  Managed the corporate safety and regulatory compliance program for Systech Corp. This program included review of all pre shipment analysis for Systech for over five years. This review process included a comprehensive toxicological review of each compound identified in every waste stream.
  •  Developed the first comprehensive HWF specification, which met the needs of product (cement) quality, environmental protection and personal health and safety in 1980.
  •  Developed the first comprehensive and field tested system for determining the chlorine specification for HWF used in cement kilns. This system remains proprietary to David Gossman. The system takes into account a wide variety of parameters including raw material and current fuel chemistry as well as kiln system design.
  •  Developed the first analytical methodology for identifying volatile and semi volatile compounds with potential health and safety impacts in HWF. Later enhanced this methodology by utilizing wide bore capillary chromatography and multiple detector systems.
  •  In 1983, provided the initial design and system specifications for an on site computerized shipment receipt and invoicing system at multiple commercial RCRA, TSDFs. The system provided significant manpower savings and paid for itself with interest income from faster invoice receipts within one year.
  •  Developed the first three-tiered hazardous waste testing program in 1981 including pre shipment testing, shipment receipt testing and blended waste testing. By using such a multi tiered system, this program was the first to effectively deal with the QA/QC issue relative to testing at RCRA facilities. 
  •   Developed a complete operations and safety manual for use at RCRA permitted hazardous waste fuel facilities.
  •   Developed a comprehensive laboratory and operations training program for the Paulding, Ohio HWF facility which has subsequently been used at five additional RCRA permitted hazardous waste fuel facilities.
  •  Developed and published the first high speed methodology for determining metals in HWF utilizing organic matrix dilution and direct aspiration into an atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
  •  Developed and published the first analytical methodology to utilize ion chromatography to determine F, Cl, Br, S, and P in HWF.
  •  Developed and published the first analytical methodology specifically designed to determine PCBs in HWF. The method was eventually expanded to utilize computerized, graphics based pattern recognition.
  •  Managed the first commercial hazardous waste fuel (HWF) blending facility operating at a cement plant. The facility in Paulding, Ohio was the first of its kind with a complete on-site laboratory and storage facility operating in full compliance with RCRA in 1980.
